A little about me

Hi, I’m Aki.

I grew up in a small city near Montreal. I’m now building a life in Barbados, where video, design and construction finally came together.

Those three things have been part of my life for as long as I can remember.

I was always
moving things around.

At four, I already wanted to be an interior designer. Growing up, I repainted my bedroom every six months and went through a phase of rearranging the furniture almost every day. I wanted to try every possible layout.

My mum raised my sister and me to be independent. She taught us how to use a hammer and gave us room to try things. We turned a bookcase into a bed base, built shelves for closets, and kept finding something else to change.

Making things.
And making films.

I studied cabinetmaking at the École du meuble in Montreal before moving to Barbados. But working with my hands started long before that.

So did filming. My mum bought me a digital camera and a tripod when I was young. I made films with my friends and edited them myself. Design, building and video were already there, even before I figured out how to bring them together.

Barbados was supposed
to be a stop along the way.

I first came here in 2020 and met my Bajan family for the first time. The original plan was Australia, but COVID closed the borders. We came to Barbados while we waited.

Then we built a life here. Now it’s where we see ourselves putting down roots and raising a family. It’s also the place where my three biggest loves finally became one part of my everyday life.

Every corner
has potential.

I love working with an existing space. A narrow corner, an awkward step, something that has to stay: those are the things that get my brain going. When everything is possible, choosing is the hard part.

I like coming up with ideas and actually making them happen. I’ll get hands-on, try something new, and bring in people I trust for the parts that need other skills. And when I film a project, I want you to see the process and the people behind it.

Have something in mind?
